Research division

Macao Water launched its research program in 1989. Over the past decade, the Research Division has completed over fifty Scientific Research projects. We have been implementing this program with strong technical support from the research centers of the Ondeo Services. Our current Program covers 5 areas:

1. Raw Water Study

Starting from the dry season of 1998-1999, Macao and its nearby region have suffered from the high salinity in drinking water. In order to address this issue, Macao Water has been working with the famous scientific research institutes and universities in China and overseas to research on the water source and water quality models and to simulate with computer the impact of seawater on Modaomen waterway where the raw water intake of Macao Water is located. The outcome of this research is expected to lead to an optimum raw water option for Macao and its nearby region.

2. The Application of New Coagulants in the Water Treatment Process

The goal of this research is to compare the different types of coagulants used in water treatment process. Information obtained from this research will be available to optimize coagulant dosage in water treatment.

3. Organics in Raw Water and THMs Formation

Organics in raw water, or their eventual removal, affect significantly the formation of disinfection by-products. It is therefore important to have a better knowledge on the organics in the raw water (especially the organic pollution in water source) in Macao. The research will help to improve further the quality of treated water supplied by Macao Water.

4. Laboratory Expertise Development

New analytical techniques for water quality analysis (for example, method for pesticide s like haloacetic acids and algae toxin analysis) are being developed in the laboratory.

5. The Quality Assurance System of the Laboratory

Developing a quality assurance system that can satisfy the ISO/IEC 17025:1999, so that the quality of our laboratory can reach an international standard, providing a better service for Macao citizens.
